The king of
Denmark, Hamlet's father, is murdered by his uncle Claudius who usurps the throne
and marries the king's widow, Gertrude. Hamlet is told this terrible truth by
his father's ghost which wants to be revenged. However, Hamlet is uneasy, tortured
by scruples and doubts. Tom, he pretends to be insane and spurns his beloved
Ophelia. He is not able to murder Claudius, whom he comes across deep in prayer,
and erroneously murders Polonius, Ophelia's father, who is hiding behind a curtain
to eavesdrop. Claudius dispatches his nephew to England in the hope that he
will be killed, but Hamlet is captured by pirates and sent back to Denmark.
During Hamlet's absence Ophelia becomes insane and commits suicide by drowning.
Laertes, Ophelia's brother, returns from France to revenge the death of his

of Laertes' sword in poison. Hamlet is stabbed by Laertes, but mortally wounds
Laertes and Claudius while Queen Gertrude is drinking poison intended for her
